I got a suggestion to share my favorite Maniac Cop trivia, so here goes:
-Director William Lustig had Robert Z'Dar in mind after seeing him as the villain in The Night Stalker (1987), another slasher-esque police procedural with subtle supernatural elements. Writer Larry Cohen later expressed his disappointment in the casting choice, as he intended for Matt Cordell to be much more quick and agile as opposed to a hulking brute.
-The movie was funded by a white lie: the footage of the St. Patrick's Day parade scenes was shot before production on the rest of the film began, some of which was shot by director Sam Raimi, who also played the reporter at the parade in a brief cameo. Some of the parade footage was then presented by Raimi to potential investors under the claim the film needed funding to finish production, which the investors approved, not realizing they were funding the full film production.
-Lustig would later repay the favor as a background actor in Army of Darkness (he's the bald guy grabbing a shovel while Ash is finishing up telling his story to an unfazed fellow S-Mart employee played by Ted Raimi (who would himself go on to have a reporter cameo in Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence).
-The film crew did not have permission to film the parade, eventually leading to them being shooed away by police after already getting the needed footage.
-The police officer drinking on the job at the parade was not an actor and was caught on film by pure chance.
-Lustig and Cohen came up with the tagline "You have the right to remain silent... forever!" at a lunch meeting years before they actually began working on Maniac Cop.
-The coroner was played by Lustig's real life doctor at the time because Lustig wanted the technical jargon regarding the fatal injuries first victim Cassie Phillips received to sound authentic.
-Cassie was played by Jill Gatsby, who is Larry Cohen's daughter. She frequently played characters who get killed off in movies her late father wrote and/or directed.

"They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway."
As our day began, we had to figure out the best way to get to Manhattan; and there are SO many options! Public transit, Uber/Lyft, etc. Maybe we're a little nuts, but after much discussion, we decide that we would actually DRIVE ourselves IN to Manhattan. We reserved a parking spot at a garage neat The Plaza Hotel (which the girls wanted to visit). From there, we'll just take taxis, Ubers, and walk from place to place.
We parked at a garage right next to the famous Plaza Hotel, so of course, we had to stop in. I liked the little "Home Alone 2" display case. We also looked up the cost of a regular room (not even the "Kevin suite" as Turner calls it)... and honestly, how do people afford to stay at this place??
Tumblr media
The Plaza Hotel
We has some time to kill before heading to see "The Great Gatsby", so we headed over to Times Square for a bit; The M&M store, and of course, we HAD to stop in the Krispy Kreme store. The light was on!
Tumblr media
A few sights in Times Square
The theater showing "Gatsby" was half a block down from the Ed Sullivan Theater... home of "The Late Show" with Stephen Colbert. Jill and I visited this theater on our honeymoon, but in 2002, a guy named Dave was still doing a show there. ;)
Tumblr media
Ed Sullivan Theater - Home of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert
"The Great Gatsby" was absolutely fantastic. The actors were (in my unskilled opinion") practically flawless. The music and arrangements from the live orchestra were catchy and beautiful. The scenery was stunning, too.
We also had a super nice usher named Cesar (Valentino) who was kind, helpful, and gracious. We ran into him as we left the theater, so of course we had to grab a selfie with him. We're Instagram buddies now. ;)
If you have an opportunity to see this show, DO IT. It's outstanding!
Tumblr media
"The Great Gatsby" - Broadway Theater
The weather forecast had been calling for rain and thunderstorms ALL day. It pretty much started AND stopped while were watching "Gatsby". Since it cleared up so nicely, we were able to do a bit more exploring than we had originally planned.
We made our way to Rockefeller Center for a bit...
Tumblr media
30 Rockefeller Center (all decked out for Pride Month)
...and then headed downtown to (attempt to) see the 9/11 memorial plaza. They actually close the entire plaza down at 8:00pm, and we had JUST missed it. We may or may not make it back downtown tomorrow, BUT... that plaza (like many of the other things we're missing on this quick visit) isn't going anywhere. We'll get to see the full thing, up close, eventually.
The top photo below is as close as you could get to the North pool without breaching a cheap, plastic fence. There was plenty of security around, though, as one could imagine.
I did get some trippy photos of One World Trade, though. If you have vertigo or trouble with your equilibrioum when looking directly up at super tall buildings, I don't recommend doing that at One World Trade. ;)
Tumblr media
One World Trade, lower Manhattan.
There wasn't much else to do in that area, so we grabbed a taxi and headed back to the parking garage. We collected our car, and made our way back to our AirBnb for the night.
It was such a great day exploring a bit of New York City... and that's exactly what we plan on doing tomorrow. Apart from a vist to the top of Rockefeller Center (which, we're told, is the best observation deck in the city) we're not sure exactly what we're going to see or do, but we've got a short list of ideas going. No matter what we do, it's sure to be a good time... with lots of steps.

Class of 1999 (1990)
"Yes, but these androids were supposed to educate the students."
"Battle droids, Miles, battle droids. Military surplus, marked to be shipped to Central America for the ten-year war. That is, until the DED called. It seemed they were having a little problem in our schools. I said: 'No problem! All we have to do is marry our war machine with the basic educational model'. Wonderful results. You should have seen those Washington assholes, they were amazed. And now we've got a military contract worth billions."
"I see. So they've been waging war with my students."
"Isn't that what all teachers do?"
#class of 1999#mark l. lester#1990#C. Courtney Joyner#Bradley Gregg#traci lind#malcolm mcdowell#stacy keach#Patrick Kilpatrick#pam grier#John P. Ryan#Darren E. Burrows#Joshua John Miller#Sharon Wyatt#James Medina#Jason Oliver Lipsett#Brent David Fraser#Jill Gatsby#Sean Hagerty#Sean Sullivan#Lester's previous Class of 1984 may have been a hot mess‚ but it worked its way up to that. Through gradual escalation of assault between#Teacher and students‚ we see how easily things get out of control and deadly violence erupts (I mean it's slightly more hysterical than#That and it's thinly disguised exploitation film but still). His bizarre scifi sequel? Jettisons any idea of gradual (and indeed any hint#Of brain) in the opening few minutes‚ as acid jazz Ron Swanson rocks up to a troubled inner city school slash warzone with killbot teachers#An unusually fussy and ineffective Malc McDowell can only squirm and shrug as‚ quelle surprise‚ the death drones start savaging the#Naughtier students. Cue much violence‚ some surprisingly nifty FX‚ a lot of high octane nonsense‚ and Pam Grier taking her top off in a#Scarily literal sense. This is absolute grade A 100% certified baloney‚ but it's a hell of a ride too. Apparently it was Stacey Keach's own#Idea to have that bleach blonde look and white contacts‚ which... Stacey‚ man‚ wtf was going on at home? Utter nonsense and as far removed#From reality as the first film‚ except in the opposite direction‚ and with a lot more flamethrowers. Montessori would've been proud

Night One, Vegas!
We began our journey with staying at the same hotel I stayed at with Jetty: Only this time, Jill’s work is payin for it! God bless continuing education.
We began our evening at a place called Gatsby, wherein your heroine was girlboss-gaslit-gatekept by the bar’s website. Gatsby is in a place called Resorts World, the newest addition to the strip, and it is, as @moonlight-frittata observed the hotel Hana would open as DVa, is she were going to open a hotel and casino in Vegas. The theme of the night became “This is a bar for 22 year olds!” The whle hotel complex was flashy, rife with LEDS, and the spaces were made for you to be observed as you drink the night away. It has the feel of a bachelorette party, even on a quiet night.
So, on to my being misled by the website. Gatsby, I think, brings up a particular tone. Being known for vintaged champagne brings up a particular tone. The photos on their website convey a particular tone. Having bottle service conveys a particular tone.
Strangely, none of those tones are: sitting right next to the slot machines as they drill into your ear, because this is completely open (all the better to be seen ordering the 600-1,000 dollars bottles of champagne) leading to the atmosphere being less “20s millionaire” and more “22 with too much fucking money who desperately wants to be noticed” which is fairness is actually a better takeaway from The Great Gatsby, so perhaps it is I who am the fool here.
I will, say the actual cocktails? Excellent. My French 75 was a touch sweet for my tastes, but that’s a stylistic matter of taste, and mine tend to run dry, and for such a young-toned bar, of course they ran sweet.
We looked excellent. I was vastly overdressed, given where we ended up, even for me, but I looked amazing so honestly who cares. I think my favorite thing about these two pictures is the “cheerful modern gays” versus “moody vintage gays”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we went to an Italian restaurant called Lavo, where I had a chicken dish that was very solid but ultimately quite forgettable which isn’t to say I don’t recommend the place--I went with Jetty and my gnocchi were perfect little truffled pillows--but to say I recommend getting the pasta over everything else. Sometimes the plate matters as much as the restaurant, you know.
I will attempt to keep you all updated on further developments!

Note
for the book ask! 7, 12, 15 please :)
hiii!!! 🖤
7. is there a series/book that got you into reading?
The main books of my childhood were The Famous Five by Enid Blyton which I zoomed through, and The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy which I listened to almost every night, I think I read a lot of pony books too.
12. did you enjoy any compulsory high school readings?
The only one I really enjoyed was The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins, it was dramatic, it had suspense, it just hit my vibe a lot more than anything else we had to read. I kinda liked The Great Gatsby I think I'd appreciate it more now, but at the time I was mad cos we weren't reading The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.
15. recommend and review a book.
I literally just finished Loveless by Alice Oseman (so not very articulate), and reccomending because wow. I don't really read contemporary YA, I tend to avoid it, but I made an exception because it's about being aromantic asexual. Essentially romance-obsessed Georgia Warr goes to uni and figures out her sexuality.
I thought I wouldn't relate that much to it since I realised I was ace at 15 and I've never been bothered with romance, but holy shit I related to it (more than 60 quotes highlighted). It felt like I was seen, and it's something I want my allo friends to read cos it captures the aro ace experience so well (also being painfully introverted but wanting The Uni Experience experience). What got me the most was Georgia coming out to her friends and saying it's a real thing. It's a real sexuality because there's always the fear that people are going to tell you that's not possible; and the minor characters who react negatively, in the way I'm always scared someone will when I tell them I'm aro ace. Basically big aro ace feels but also kinda cosy.
